The Appeal
As a restrained evolution of the preceding TC, MG’s TD was a stylish roadster aimed primarily at the American market. Most models were exported Stateside, which makes this British-registered right-hand drive version a relatively rare proposition.
This particular TD was a mid-production run model from 1951. Remarkably, it has had only four owners in the last 74 years, with the current owner acquiring it in 2022 and storing it in a ventilated enclosure in a garage. As you might expect from a car driven only in fine summer weather, its external condition is excellent. The green leather interior has worn well, with only light ridging along the bases, while the cream tonneau is barely marked and can be extended across the passenger side of the cabin only, if desired. The side panels are entirely of their time and give the car additional weatherproofing, and the externally mounted spare wheel appears to be as new.
Similar sentiments could be made towards the car’s mechanical condition. It starts and runs well according to its current owner, despite retaining a wealth of original parts. One former owner was the then-captain of the Civil Service Motoring Association, who appeared on the front cover of that institution’s magazine demonstrating Dunlop Trial tests in this very car.
Despite a few aftermarket modifications (most notably a five-speed Ford gearbox), most of this TD remains original both inside and out, having reportedly needed no work in recent years beyond routine servicing. The black paintwork bears very few marks and the exterior chromework gleams. Although the interior metalwork is more tarnished, the dashboard retains its swooping banks of original dials and pull-switches, all of which appear to be working. Charming period detailing like the brake efficiency indicator remain in situ, while the engine bay is in superb condition with the original body number plaque still in place. Even the underside is in good overall condition, making this a post-war classic you can simply drive away and enjoy from day one of ownership.
