The Appeal
When Jaguar decided to stop chasing Le Mans glory after 1956, plucky independent teams like John Coombs Racing and Equope Endeavour picked up the mantle. Drivers like Stirling Moss, Mike Hawthorn, Roy Salvadori and Tony Sopwith had the perfect weapon at their disposal - this car, the Mk1 3.4 MOD.
With its potent XK straight six and all-wheel disc brakes, the Mk1 3.4 nearly won the 1958 British Saloon Car Championship before returning in 1959 to utterly dominate it, winning every single race. It’s no wonder that these cars remain so popular in historic racing. Where the later Mk2 moved towards luxury, the Mk1, with its slim bucket seats, stuck closer to William Lyons’ favoured ‘sporting saloon’ ethos.
This British Racing Green 1958 car is an original RHD model, factory-fitted with the 3.4L engine and De Normanville overdrive. It has one of the final three treasured cars from a serious and reportedly very picky lifelong Jaguar collector who owned over 100 of the finest examples we are told.
It has been sparingly used in recent years, with very few miles since the last advisory-free MOT in 2019. In 2014 and again in 2019, over £6,000 was invested in the car’s mechanicals, including brake and carburettor overhaul, servicing, water pump, new engine mounts and fuel system repairs. The car received a new fuel pump, fuel pipe, coil, leads, distributor cap, condenser and points in 2024. More recently, the vendor also says he spent £3,000 to ready the car for sale, covering brake, carburettor and ignition systems. After all this recent and previous work the vendor naturally describes the car as mechanically sound and well looked after.
Buyers should consider the limited recent use and the condition of the paintwork. The bodywork appears complete and presentable, and the interior is in very good order for a car of this age. For the right buyer, this is a chance to acquire a genuine factory 3.4L Mk1 in the right colour combination and with desirable overdrive.
The vendor says:
This car is in genuine, well-maintained, original condition with considerable mechanical work fully completed to make an ideal, useable example, in contrast to the surface-level polish and underneath neglect that plagues most Mk1s. I hope any new owner will treasure it as much as the current collector and be able to use it more than he had the opportunity to."
