The Appeal
Volvo might not be the first manufacturer one thinks of when it comes to building a fiercely competitive competition special, but a man named Nick Seymour would prove all the naysayers very wrong indeed.
Few hill climb or sprint cars can claim a palmarès as extensive as this Turbo Volnik. Constructed during the winter of 1973/4 as an autocross special and subsequently modified for speed hillclimb in 1976/7, it is powered by a turbocharged, dry-sumped 2-litre Volvo B20 engine paired with a Hewland FT200 four-speed gearbox.
During its competitive career, this car accumulated approximately 350 awards, including 47 autocross FTDs. It twice won the Shelsley Walsh Special award, after which the organisers reportedly changed the rules to restrict eligibility to single-seaters only, as this sports racing car was outdoing them!
Laid up in covered storage since the end of the 1980 season, it has recently been recommissioned, and the vendor reports it runs and drives well, describing it as a joy to drive with a very secure feel. The car will need a thorough going over, but this is a proven hillclimb competitor with a notable competition history.
The vendor says:
"A joy to drive, very secure feel. When designing the car I put a lot of thought into the safety aspect as well as complying with the RAC regulations of the time. I think the total awards haul over the autocross and hillclimb time was 350, with 47 autocross FTDs. We won the Shelsey Walsh Special award twice, so the organisers changed the rules so that only single seaters were eligible (couldn't have a 'sports racing' car outdoing the single seaters)!"image.png1.33 MB
