The Appeal
Immediately after being launched in 1972, the Renault 5 became a sales hit, with buyers drawn to its low price, modern hatchback styling, spacious interior and maneuverability. A few years later, the first sporting version – the Alpine, known as the Gordini in the UK – became available, which is now recognized as an early example of the ‘hot hatch’.
Performance was increased further when the Gordini Turbo appeared with a turbocharged version of the 1.4-liter engine, producing 122 horsepower. Stiffened suspension, alloy wheels and aerodynamic trim enhanced the handling and appearance of the new model.
This genuine 1982 right-hand drive example in metallic Alpine Blue was imported to the UK some years ago, which is why it wears ‘Alpine’ badging. It has been owned by the seller since 1993, when it was saved from being scrapped, and has been stored in dry conditions since. The car is accompanied by the V5 that was issued in 1993; no previous history of the car is known.
The car wears its original paintwork and retains its original interior, badging, trim and alloy wheels. It also has the less-common black windshield and roof spoilers that are associated with the mid-engined Renault 5 Turbo 2.
After more than 25 years in storage, this car will require a comprehensive mechanical and body restoration before being returned to the road. There is visible corrosion and deterioration to the bodywork, and the mechanical, braking, fuel, cooling, electrical and suspension systems should all be assumed to require inspection, recommissioning or restoration as appropriate.
This is a rare opportunity to acquire a genuine and original Renault 5 Alpine Turbo, with an unusually long and traceable period of ownership, that is ready to be restored and enjoyed by a new owner.
