The Appeal
The Mondial is the only mid-engined four-seat convertible ever put into series production. This distinction makes these rare, stylish cars increasingly appreciated by collectors. But, as with all Ferraris, there are Mondials, and then there are Mondials. This early 1985 Quattrovalvole with the 2.9L ‘Dino’ V8 is widely considered to be the one you want. That QV head makes it much faster and more responsive than the earlier car, accompanied by that high-revving Dino howl, while the Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection and simpler electrics and specification make it easier to maintain than the later cars.
Just 629 QV cabriolets were built, of which only 282 were North American market cars like this one. Its rarity increases further because it is one of fewer than 100 with that sought-after 2.9L motor. It was likely among the last built, as the factory switched to the 3.2L engine in August 1985.
The car arrived in the UK in 2019 and was quickly subject to a comprehensive restoration by Porsche specialist Golding Barn. That work is shown in the photos and included a colour change from Rosso Corsa to Nero black, a cambelt change, a full service, and attention to the electrics. Since then, the car has covered less than 600 miles. The vendor added it to his large high-end collection in 2021. It has largely been dry stored in the intervening years.
The car is now eligible for Historic Vehicle status based on age, which the buyer may wish to apply for. This is a tidy, very low mileage example of one of Ferrari’s most unusual and rarest cars.
