The Appeal
Introduced in 1990 as the flagship of the BMW range, the 8 Series offered significantly higher levels of performance, technology and comfort, at a much higher price level, than the outgoing 6 Series. The model marked a return to the ‘pillarless’ style, with a clean side profile created by the lack of ‘B’ pillar, while pop-up headlights, a slender grille and flared arches emphasised the car’s low, wide stance.
The ‘E31’ was discontinued in 1999, making this 840Ci one of the last examples to be produced. It’s powered by the later 4.4-litre ‘M62’ V8 engine, which was torquier and more economical than the powerplant it replaced, matched to 5-speed automatic transmission. This is a Sport version, featuring slightly stiffer dampers to provide better body control.
The bodywork of this car is finished in distinctive Atlantis metallic, complemented by quad exhaust pipes, replaced in August 2025, and 18-inch M Parallel 5-spoke alloy wheels, which were refurbished in March 2025. Michelin Pilot Sport tyres (245/40 at the front, 265/40 at the rear) are fitted.
There are some small stone chips on the bonnet and minor marks on rear bumper. Some small areas of corrosion can be seen on the rear wheel arches and under the drivers door; the seller states that they have not grown in the two years they have owned the car, and that the car has been stored in dry conditions during that time.
The interior is highly original, from its silver grey leather seats with blue piping, to the original factory-fitted floor mats and BMW carphone in the centre console. Several components such as the headlining and parcel shelf were retrimmed in faux Alcantara in November 2025. Electric rear blinds are fitted.
Documented work during the last two years includes new front brake calliper housings, new wheels and tyres, rebuilt air conditioning system, and a new stainless steel exhaust. The car has been serviced by main BMW dealers and BMW specialists. The car’s documentation includes a fully stamped service book from 1999, and invoices and receipts from around 2014 to date.
This well cared-for, very late example of the iconic BMW 8 Series offers distinctive, V8-powered grand touring driving pleasure. The private registration plate is included in the sale.
