The Triumph Trident was a technically advanced, high performance bike for the time. It was developed alongside the Honda CB750, and despite being released before the flagship Honda, it was always overshadowed, despite being the first of the real ‘super bikes’. The Trident and the X-75 Hurricanes share the same family, with the Hurricane being redesigned and stretched for the US market.
The key to all this was it’s 53bhp 740cc motor. It was an air-cooled, OHC straight-3, with four gears. The engine had lower vibrations than existing 360 twins, and the Trident was a deliberate move from Triumph to move their model ranges beyond the 650cc twins. The original prototypes had the traditional ‘Triumph teardrop’ look, and was later redesigned by Ogle Design. The one we have here wears this updated, more square look.
The one we have here is really beautiful. Its a classic, bright aubergine colour, with lots of matte black and chrome features. It’s quite an aggressive look for a Triumph, but this was a new type of bike for Triumph. The colour is not for everyone, but there is no denying that this paint is in beautiful condition. It is very deep and glossy, and polished to a bright sheen. The wedge tank a has a practical, rubber kneepad that add to the rugged look, so you don’t scratch that lovely paint. The curvy headers split and re-join quickly, and flow into polished, pit-free chrome trumpet style exhausts. The whole thing looks robust but weirdly elegant. These are fantastic bikes with plenty of presence, which ride fantastically. This is a bike that wants too be back on the road, it’s something that has a whole life ahead of it, but it’s not so removed from what bikes are today.
