Description
The MG Midget was produced between 1961 and 1980. Initially offered as a badge engineered version of the Austin Healey Sprite, it became one of Britain’s most successful sports cars – around 230, 000 were produced, many for the export market. The MK3 cars arrived in 1966 and were the first models with a proper folding convertible roof that was attached to the car. They also came equipped with a mildly detuned version of the “Cooper S” 1275cc “A” series engine and from 1967 a slightly taller final drive ratio. They are the rarest and perhaps most desirable of the Midgets and retain various attractive features of the early cars.
This car is a 1968 MG Midget MK3 in outstanding condition. In 2006 it was treated to a “nut and bolt” rebuild including a new “heritage” body-shell – far too much to list here. Invoices with the car show expenditure of £14k back then, in addition to the cost of the paintwork. The car has been used sparingly since, covering less than 1000 miles and remains in the same order as when the work was completed. The “Black Tulip” paint finish is flawless, the chrome-work is as new and the under bonnet is in highly detailed “show” order. There are one or two upgrades, a roll bar (which could be removed) leather reclining front seats and a stainless exhaust. The fully rebuilt engine is fitted with an unleaded cylinder head.
Aside from the upgrades this is Midget is best described as close to perfect (many would say concours) and it would be difficult to re-create it for less than £20k, plus the cost of a project car. It came to us from a regular customer - his classics are always of a certain standard but at 6”3 he has struggled to drive it comfortably!
