Only 2, 800 miles in past 28 years!
Surely the prettiest BGT before Leyland's cost cutting and the 1970's diluted the formula!
Lovely history with much work carried out during the 1990's (with receipts and photos). These include gearbox rebuild, body strip & rebuild, interior rebuild. Little (or no use) between 1992 and at least 2005. More recently work to make usable including servicing, head gasket and full stainless steel exhausts (2017 & 2018). In total invoices over the years for thousands.
Long term ownership (approx 1990 to 2015)
Mileage history as follows:
10th July 1990 - 22, 630 - MOT
17th August 1990 - 23, 067 - Invoice (£1, 700) Gearbox & front suspension rebuild
12th July 1991 - 23, 210 - MOT
4th July 1999 - 23, 967 - MOT
23rd Nov 2015 - 23, 986 - MOT
5th May 2017 - 24, 398 - MOT
6th June 2018 - 25, 047 - MOT
Current mileage - 25, 410
Ticked all the boxes for me insofar as:
GHD3 car - so 3 syncro box, narrow tunnel, leather, early MG interior door pulls and early Smiths fuel gauge etc, plus this car has must have options for me of:
Wire wheels
Overdrive
Sunroof
&
Rare & beautiful blue trim piped white and blue carpets
Correct alloy bonnet
It also has the correct early type front wings for this age car (wider gap between side light unit and grille). These are replaced with the later wings on many rebuilt cars.
It also has a working period radio and Motolita steering wheel.
Still positive earth and lovely original feel.
having had many Triumphs & MG's over the years I had been looking for a suitable car at sensible money until I found this. It has a lovely patina and the feel of an original car. The work in the 90's is mainly for stripping, paint and trim, rather than wholesale structural work. I purchased the car in Barrow in Furness and drove 220 miles back to Cheltenham. Knowing the lack of use I was prepared with AA membership and to avoid the motorways, however she drove so well (even in the summer M6 & M5 traffic jams) I drove all the way by motorway with no issues.
This was in August. I have tinkered for fun, cut back the paint, fitted new number plates and unseized the sunroof etc. but it's the usual story of not using it enough. I no longer have a garage at the house so its off to winter storage soon. I can do this, but I feel that it will probably stay there for too long and I won't have time to enjoy in 2019, 2020... so I am tentatively advertising before it gets tucked away and if sold I will get a modern toy until the garage is re-instated here.....
Currently perfectly usable and leathers up well, but please don't be deceived by the photos. The paintwork is old, microblistered in places and bits have been refreshed over the years. To improve I would;
Strip and repaint the outer body. I did this myself on a C GT and so easy to strip to a point where the bodyshop can just prep & paint
Paint wheels
Re-chrome
Repair to seat (clean tear)
Trim panels are not original design - I would replace door cards & rest of 6 piece trim kit.
Each to their own, but the above would transform an older rebuild of a proper car into a stunning desirable early GT, but no rush to do it.
Of course it has 'character' such as fuel gauge reading backwards (suspect gauge / sender mismatch & grossly over reading rev counter, but drives very well. MOT Exempt (but MOT'd) & tax exempt
I have priced a little over what I paid (bearing in mind extraction from Barrow!), but please no canvassers or offers as I think this is a fair price and I am happy to keep it.
Many thanks,
