1954 AUSTIN A40 SOMERSET DROPHEAD COUPE (1 owner only 24000 miles )
Finished in light grey with dark grey leather trim and matching grey hood. The Somerset was made to replace the Austin A40 Sports car. This motorcar was purchased new on 22/ 7/ 1954 by Miss Chadwick of Wimslow in Cheshire. Chassis number GD875058, engine number 1G991469 and registration number UFM 543. All numbers are matching. The body was made by Carbodies of Coventry and differed from the saloon in having separate front seats that fold forward to give access to the rear.
This is a very original and unmolested solid example which does need work but is, in my opinion, an easy restoration. It has taken me 30-40 years to find one of these for sale as my father had one when I was small and nostalgia being what it is – made me long for one for such a long time. This one is a lovely car but I just don’t have the space to keep it nor the time to realise its full potential. We can ascertain from the servicing schedules that the car has covered 8189 miles by 11/ 4/ 1978, 11494 miles by 23/ 8/ 1978, 13043 miles by 31/ 5/ 1979, 15296 miles by 30/ 5/ 1980, 17863 miles by 04/ 6/ 1981, 19543 miles by 27/ 11/ 1981 by the original lady owner from new. The mileage today is an incredibly low 24622 miles. So, what we have is very low mileage example which starts first time, runs very well and drives like new.
