SUMMARY
This really has got to be one of, if not "the" best examples of the somewhat rare Rover 200 series Cabriolet; the condition of this car is nothing short of breathtaking, and what's more, is it's all original. Please note this is NOT a restored car, but an incredibly well preserved original example. In many case, photos often flatter a vehicle, and when you see it in the flesh, it often never really looks quite as nice. Well, with this car, it's actually the other way around, in so much as the photos really don't do it justice, and any viewing is guaranteed to impress.
Supplied by Phillips Rover, Wembley on 27th May 1994 to a Lady from Harrow, who paid the not so insignificant sum back then of £13, 587. 90; both the original order form and sales invoice are present in the extensive history file to confirm this. This lady owner subsequently kept the car right up to 2012, covering a mere 17, 000 miles, after which it was sold to by a master of a rather famous Public School, who'd bought it as a present to himself upon his retirement. He barely used the car in the ensuing five years, covering only 5, 000 miles, and as a result, it spent most of that time in an underground garage, in a rather smart North London suburb, just gathering dust. In December 2016, it was then discovered and bought by a good friend of mine, who has an uncanny knack of uncovering unique vehicles, in amazing condition. Upon taking ownership, he very prudently decided that as the vehicle had been driven very little over the last few years, to have it re-commissioned, with all fluids being changed, brakes being inspected, and timing belt, water pump and alternator all being replaced; using genuine Unipart parts, where available. Three tyres were also replaced, due to the originals having become perished. He then proceeded to cover around 2500 "good weather" miles in it, during his year and a half ownership, so it can be said the car has been nicely run back in.
As has been said, the condition of this car is really something to behold, and throughout it's entire 24 year life, has been garaged. I've been involved with classic cars for going on 20 years now and often despair at the use of terms such as "rust free", "mint", "out of the box" and "time warp"; terms, which have become far too liberally misused by sellers who are seemingly jumping on the classic car bandwagon, attracted by the rapid growth in recent years. However in total contrast, all of those aforementioned terms certainly wouldn't be out of place when describing this exceptional car.
I had a the hatchback version of the 214Si back in the nineties, and have very fond memories of it. It was reliable, lively and very economical and was superb to drive… I do have to say though this particular 214 Cabriolet today, in 2018, actually drives better than my four year 214Si did back in 1997!.. What I had forgotten though was that Rovers of this era really did have a distinctive "quality feel" about them, and although not quite up to the benchmark set by the likes of Mercedes, it's certainly "a cut" above the contemporary offerings by Ford, Vauxhall and maybe even VW.
As you'd expect the vehicle comes supplied with all its original keys, two remote fobs, all documentation, hand books, code cards, stamped service book as well a large A4 file lots of documentation including all its old MOT certificates, all filed in plastic pockets. Also included are all original tools, jack extra (the plastic on the polystyrene carrier in the boot is still in place in some places), Tonneau cover and also the very rare red hood transit/ storage cover; basically everything that came with the car when new, is still with it and still in almost as new condition.
I could write page upon page about this beautiful car, but to summarise, this is probably the best Rover Cabriolet available; I always say "probably" just in case there's an unregistered example in a museum somewhere. That said, I think values of the 200 series Cabriolet will almost certainly increase in coming years, but notwithstanding that, this is car you can enjoy from day one, simply jump in, drive it and be very, very proud of it. I'm also confident it you were to take it to a show or two, and I'm sure it would win at least one prize, possibly more!. I've genuinely enjoyed having this car; it's a pleasure to drive, makes you smile ear to ear, and it really does turn heads, but in a good way, and admiring glaces are usually followed by an "approving nod"!.
THE MTSV DIFFERENCE
Unlike some, I don’t just simply go out, buy any old car, give it a good clean, then advertise it for more than the purchase price, disregarding any issues the car may have in the hope the new buyer won’t notice…I just couldn’t do that. The cars I source are carefully selected and I work very hard so that when my cars leave me, I have the satisfaction of knowing they are as good as they possibly can be within the constraints I have. As such I have many repeat customers and new customers that have been recommended via word of mouth…the ultimate accolade for anyone in business.
Finally, I'm situated in Keighley, West Yorkshire (Postal Code Area BD21) which is approximately 11 miles from Skipton, and 20 miles West of Leeds.
