This car is a one-off and was bought from the original designer/ builder who had a close connection to Marlin. In the mid-late ‘90s Marlin were looking to produce a new model based around a BMW. This vehicle was conceived as a contender for that role. Sadly before the car was completed it became apparent that Marlin were going to favour a different design. Consequently, interest in the project was lost and the vendor acquired it in 1999 as an unfinished rolling chassis including the donor BMW320 engine.
The vendor tells us he was drawn to it as he very much likes the Frazer Nash / BMW styling and he continued this theme where possible – front grill, pepper pot wheel rims. Hence also the stainless steel exhaust and nickel plated swinging arms, which provide a more authentic retro look than chrome. Similarly, the inclusion of aeroscreens was to emulate the racing style, although a full screen is also fitted as the vendor’s plan was always to include a hood for added practicality.
With no back history to draw on, the vendor anticipated many hours of fettling to get the car to drive well and planned construction so that, if necessary, the vehicle could be dismantled and worked on with ease. However, the vendor tells us his fears were unfounded – the car was balanced & drove well from day 1.
