The Car has a wooden body sitting on BMC mini subframes front and rear. The drive unit is a 998cc BMC mini A series combined engine/ gearbox unit. The front brakes are Mini Cooper S servo assisted disc’s and the rear drum units. The front seats are leather from a Daimler Sovereign and the rear bench seat also use leather from the same donor car.
The donor parts list is extensive obviously heavily featuring BMC Mini parts from the donor 1963 BMC Mini Van but just for a start, the headlights are Hillman Avenger, steering column and controls Triumph Dolomite, rear light also Triumph Dolomite, dashboard switches Fiat Strada, Wiper Citroen, etc, etc.
Hustler cars were designed by William Towns who was an internationally acclaimed Designer who designed the Aston Martin Lagonda. William Towns trained as an architect and had used structural plywood. This material had been used to great effect in the 2nd World War combat aircraft and boats. In the early 1960s, stressed plywood was also used for the original Marcos. Towns designed the Hustler in wood to utilise the strength of plywood and specified 18 & 13mm marine plywood for the construction of the body combined with mahogany type woods to make the structure and a lot of brass screws. The roll bar are solid Ash wood chosen for strength and look. The side beams are Mahogany with Ash wood trim.
The car passed its first MOT in November 1982 and the latest MOT this month. The car is used whenever the weather is dry for short local trips and is an absolute selfie magnet. This car attracts attention.
