THIS is my 1963 Rover 95 with just four owners from new, the last one having kept her for 26 years!
She is a two-tone grey with a rich coloured cream leather interior. Her straight-six 2625cc engine runs beautifully and when she is idling, you could easily be excused for thinking she had stalled. The 95 was a late build P4 model and came with all steel panels including the doors. Rover had begun to have doubts over their aluminium panels which they thought dented too easily and, once metal doors were re-introduced, buyers seemed much happier to have that satisfying clunk to hear when they closed.
Her panels are really straight and this is a car pretty much devoid of inherent rust and rot. The paintwork is flat, make no mistake. But she would be a simply enough car to re-paint and that would make her look a million dollars. She is mega sound underneath with a great chassis. Her floors, including the boot floor, are also in extremely good and original condition. Even her slide-out tool kit which sits beneath the passenger parcel shelf still has every tool included. The driver's side of the front bench seat shows some cracking to the leather but I would think that many would prefer to leave that lived-in look. She performs superbly on the road. There is a slight blow from the exhaust but you need to be standing outside to be aware of it. It simply glides along with its 3. 0 to 1 axle ratio making up for it being a non-overdrive model. This car would cruise comfortable at 75-80 mph without revving its whatnots off.
I must also point out that the rear crankshaft oil seal - the Achilles heel of all P4 Rovers does not leak and is absolutely bone dry. Not even a drip!
All in all, a lovely honest old Rover from an era when top luxury cars were in a league of their own build-wise. Even her wooden dash, door cappings and headlining need nothing. I find her quite delightful.
