A lovely example of this brilliant design.
Imported from Germany in 2013, I bought it in 2019. It had been listed as a cat D (light damage, but expensive or irreplaceable parts) - clocks had been repaired and the headlight was non-standard. Other than that, there was nothing to cause any alarm. Cat D cannot include the frame and everything is straight and true.
Over the last 2 years I have ridden it regularly and replaced all parts to standard, except for the clocks which I have greatly improved - the standard items are pretty poor, with speedo needles that can fail, weak odometer resets and idiot lights that are too dim to ever be seen. The replacement is a top-end Acewell unit which is superb - Rev counter, digital speed, temp gauge, gear indicator and multiple odometers and various functions. It sits flush to the yoke and looks many, many times better than the original. Wired into the loom with skill and patience, but the originals are there if you prefer (in km).
Rest of the bike has been gone through in detail and thoroughly cleaned up and serviced (as I do with all my bikes, new & older) - this includes strip down of suspension linkages, new fork seals, wheel bearings, fuel tap, carb parts, etc. Excellent Contis, new gold DID chain, brake pads, coolant and some useful spares. Polished fork lowers, yokes and switchgear pods look superb. Importantly, it is also the later model with lower fuel taps and a fuel pump - the earlier variants could not use the last 3 litres of fuel!
It is a great, relaxing ride with some real quality of design and components, but still has the power to weight of a 350LC! It can ‘hustle’ when needed.
It rides without any faults, has just had fresh oil and valve clearance check and is, without doubt, one of the cleanest out there, anywhere...
AND, of course, everyone loves the design. Except for those who hate it... You will meet both!
