Competition is second nature to Porsche, and the manufacturer has given rise to some of the best racing machines of their time. The Carrera RSR was one of these and, during the 1974 and 1975 seasons it cruised round circuits, dominating its class with a performance and reliability that enabled the car to win races. Developed from the celebrated Carrera RS 2. 7, the 2. 8-litre RSR became the 3-litre RSR, the ultimate evolution before the 934/ 935 Turbo era. It won multiple titles in FIA Group 4, as well as IMSA and Trans Am championships in the US.
The 3. 0 RSR was equipped with a Type 911/ 75 engine with special overhead cams, dual ignition, Bosch mechanical fuel injection, dry sump lubrication and a twin-megaphone exhaust producing a sound to rouse anyone…With a displacement of 2 992 cc and high compression ratio, the power, reaching 350 bhp at 8 000 rpm, was transmitted to the wheels via a 5-speed box and Sachs clutch. It had suspension springs in either steel or titanium.
The Porsche Carrera RSR was given five-spoke, centre-lock wheels (identical to those on the 917), fitted with ultra-wide 14-inch rear tyres. As always, the Weissach constructor paid great attention to the weight, using lightweight body panels and a stripped-out interior, to ensure it didn't exceed 900 kg. These characteristics gave the car a top speed of over 270 km/ h and 0 to 100 km/ h in under five seconds.
Supremely well-designed, the 911 Carrera RSR proved to be one of the best " competition - client " cars produced by Porsche.
Châssis 005 0004
The example on offer has unusual origins and an impressive racing history.
When Porsche ceased production of the 3-litre RSR to focus on the 934, the factory still had four unused RSR chassis. One of these was used to build an extra example for Ludwig Heimrath, and the remaining three were given to Kremer Racing, one of the teams most closely connected with Porsche. The car presented is one of these chassis, bearing number 005 0004. This is the 'secret' number allocated by Porsche, the first three digits relating to the year (1975) and the last four to the chassis number. Kremer also used this numbering system for its own cars. And so the total of 911 3. 0 RSRs built was 53 plus these four, 57 cars in total.
Once with the Kremer brothers, our car was assigned to the driver Cees Siewertsen (1974 Dutch champion in another RSR), to take part in the German DRM and GT championships, in the good-looking "Wallys Jeans Lucky Star" livery. During 1975, the RSR accumulated races and results, demonstrating its qualities and relaibility, with just four retirements in 12 events. Siewertsen secured two victories (in July at Diepholz and in November in Hockenheim), in addition to a third place in October at Zolder. The 3. 0 RSR continued racing in 1976, this time in the hands of H. Asselborn, then H. W. Schewe and G. Freiberger, with Asselborn finishing third in the Nürburgring 300km during April.
Following its glory years, our car changed hands and found its way to Iceland. In 2003, the owner decided to restore it, sending the car to Germany to have the bodywork restored by Freisinger and mechanical work carried out by Roitmayer. All components were refurbished, conforming to the correct period. Between 2004 and 2008, the RSR took part in several high-profile historic events such as the Modena Cento Ore, Le Mans Classic and the Classic Endurance Racing Championship. It then sold to the US, and was driven sparingly by its new owner.
In 2013, the Porsche returned to Europe to join a major collection of competition cars, being driven occasionally. It has been taken out very little since a significant engine refresh and overhaul in 2017.
The car is therefore presented superbly in its original livery. It is equipped with a competition engine built around a turbo block, for improved reliability and to avoid damaging the original Type 911/ 75 RSR engine, with magnesium crankcase, which will be delivered in a separate crate, with the car. The current engine has the original trumpets and injection system and is connected to a correct Type 915 gearbox. It has the original braking set-up with 917 discs and calipers. We note the presence of electronic ignition and rev counter, with the original components included with the spares accompanying the car. The spares include the original " Lollipop " seats, with FIA-compliant Recaro seats currently fitted to the car.
This Porsche Carrera comes with extensive documentation retracing its history and different owners, as well as period photos, photos of the restoration, the original ONS Wagenpass, current FIA papers and various historical documents. It is one of the small number of 3. 0 RSRs built by Kremer, and is ready to take to historic circuits once more to demonstrate the qualities that allowed the model to build one of the best racing records of its time.
