1960 - MZ RT 125/ 3 - London
I’ve had such a fun year buzzing around on this 1960 MZ 125. Sadly the family are moving overseas and it needs to find a new home.
I had no idea about MZ’s when I bought this, but a friend who runs Bolt Motorcycles in London told me it was a very special bike and shared the ad on Car and Classic with me. I fell in love immediately.
Made in 1960, it has only had two previous owners. The first owner was a British serviceman who had owned it on an army base in Germany, and once de-mobbed, he brought it back to the the UK with him. The person I then bought it from was up in Yorkshire and was an MZ enthusiast (who had owned many MZ’s over the years) who had had lovingly rewired and then serviced it to incredible condition.
It has been registered as a Historic Vehicle, and so is ready to go with no MOT or Tax requirement in the UK. Insurance very cheap as it’s a classic too which helps.
Last month I had the the carb stripped and cleaned and it ticks over beautifully. Also had the clutch rod replaced so it feels smooth to ride. (The guys at TTT Motorcycles in Bethnal Green are experts if you ever need some help, which I did as I’m no mechanic). About half a million of these were made so there are still plenty of parts available from German online stores which is great.
I top the battery up with a trickle charge, but for about £400 you could buy a kit convert the bike from 6v to 12v which many people do apparently.
The mileage is incredible low for a classic bike of this age, at 8000 miles, (13, 000km).
Fun fact as I’m sure many will know, the blueprints the led to the MZ RT 125, were handed over in WWII reparations, and the BSA Bantam’s design was, ‘heavily inspired’ by the MZ, so a very similar bike.
