McLaren M20 recreation for sale.
Do you want to own the last of the great Can-Am cars built by the greatest team in the history of that iconic series. The M20 is arguably the best car that McLaren built for the Can-Am even if it was the least successful in terms of race wins. It was a big step forward from the all conquering M8s in terms of handling and aerodynamics, but the one thing these cars have now, is rarity. Unlike its predecessors that were passed to Trojan for customer sales and were made in plentiful numbers the M20 was only built by the team for the 1972 season and only 3 cars were ever made making it the rarest of all the McLaren Can-Am cars. These cars never come up for sale and the last time one did was in 2014 and sold for US$ 2. 000. 000 so what is one worth now ??
Now there is an opportunity to own what is probably the closest you will ever come to the real thing for a fraction of what it would cost if you were even able to buy an original car.
This car Has been built in NZ over a 12yr period. The builder has made an amazing job of replicating the car in great detail to the original specs allowing for the changes in materials and some mechanicals to modern specs.
The full aluminium tub is bonded and rivetted and laid out to the original design and dimensions
The suspension is as per original design and lay out with double adjustable shocks with 700lb and 400lb springs. The uprights are alloy copies
Wheel base and track is the same as original, Wheels are a 2 piece copy of the original 4 spoke McLaren wheels 11’’ x 15’’ fronts and 18” x 15” rears
Brakes are Wilwood 6 piston calipers on 12” vented discs, this is a departure to a modern part for convenience and availability of parts.
The Engine is a period correct BBC iron block with ZL1 period correct alloy heads and makes 700hp with Hilborn mechanical injection.
Trans Axle is a custom made 4 speed unit that has be made to suit original pick ups for bell housing and rear suspension so could be swapped out for a LG Hewland with minimal work.
The body took 2yrs to make from scratch and is visually stunning and so close to the original that it looks amazing on track with its huge wings and aero fences down the length of the cars sides.
From small details like the twin stacked oil coolers behind the twin radiators in the side pods to the replica McLaren wheels, correct gauges and dash board, gear shift mechanism. This car goes, drives and looks like the real thing.
A deviation in the exhaust system to a 180 degree over the top rather than the underneath system is glorious to look at and the sound has to be heard.
This car is visually and dimensionally correct and is listed with Motorsport NZ as Schedule “A” sports racing car so its able to race in the “Super Sports” class as well as “Formula Libra”.
Looking for expressions of interest and price to be negotiated. If a prospective buyer wants the car to be fitted with a LG Hewland and period brakes etc this can be done.
