Description
This hupmobile belonged to my father, who purchased it from sotheby's in july 1990. i have the original catalogue from the sale. This particular hupmobile was not a recent import from the usa when purchased back in 1990, but had been in the uk since new. It was first registered under the motor car act of 1920, on 04/ 05/ 1923 to a mr. A. e. Chine of east ham, london. It was later purchased by the past president of the veteran car club of great britain, cecil bendall. It was used by cecil and his daughter, before being sold in 1973 to a william stevenson. Upon his death in 1987 it passed to his son john alistair stevenson., who then entered it in auction at sotheby's in 1990, where my father was the successful bidder.
the original importers used in 1914 to bring the car into the uk, were whiting ltd., and the coachwork was by oakley london, who are still in business today, making some of the world's finest coach built horse boxes.
the car was last mot'd until october 1990. it comes with the original buff logbook from 1923. the car is dated by the vcc, and carrie. Certificate no. 1394 (09/ 05/ 1973). a good original veteran with just 4 families from new. It also comes with the (fantastic) original no. Plate from new -hm 311.
as you can see from the photographs my father started a restoration project, but sadly passed away before it was finished, however much mechanical work was done, and he did have the engine running. I don't know too much about exactly what had been done, but am happy to answer to the best of my knowledge any questions.
