We are delighted to offer for sale this beautifully restored example of Citroen’s iconic DS 21 in Luxurious Pallas Specification.
Innovation was synonymous with Citroen design, their 1934 Traction Avant featured aerodynamic styling, front wheel drive, a monocoque body and independent suspension while most competitors offerings still resembled versions of Henry Ford’s Model T.
With its debut at the Paris Salon of 1955, the DS (Desiree Speciale) continued this theme and showcased an array of technical firsts which were met with amazement at its unveiling. This reaction was repeated in New York with the DS being dubbed, ‘The Dream Car of Tomorrow on the Road Today’.
In addition to its cutting-edge technical abilities, Flaminio Bertone’s aerodynamic styling was so futuristic and ahead of its time that onlookers suggested aliens must have invaded the drawing office and assisted the design.
Featuring a sophisticated hydraulically operated system which controlled suspension, steering, brakes, clutch operation and gear change, the ‘Citro-Matic’ DS was truly unlike any car seen before or since. Indeed, it is no understatement to say that the DS remained the worlds most technically advanced car for the two decades it remained in production.
The luxurious quality of ride comfort, road holding and braking was a revelation and ensured the DS with a respected following that continues today. This was further endorsed by Rolls Royce who licenced the clever hydropneumatic suspension technology for their Silver Shadow. In addition to the executive levels of refinement, the DS proved itself a worthy competitor having won the Monte Carlo rally of 1959 outright.
Featuring styling updates introduced in 1968, this impeccable, late DS21 semi-automatic features electronic fuel ignition, directional headlamps which turn with the steering and the luxurious Pallas level of trim specification.
Finished in Argent Green with Tan leather and carpets and including the original headrests and centre armrest, this DS21 was completely restored to original specification in 2019 with the accompanying Citroen Heritage certificate confirming its matching numbers. Original manuals, handbooks and brochures for both the car and original radio are present and the extensive history file and photographic records of the restoration endorse the quality of work undertaken to bring this automotive icon to its current superb condition.
