Solid and honest, this truck is a credit to the previous owner who sorted it nicely over many years and used it regularly. I took it as a trade for my ’48 Ford and I’m tempted to keep it because it’s such a practical and useful thing, and it definitely creates a stir at the local recycling centre. However, it’s not really my thing… This is the short bed model which is much rarer than the long body and more practical for our rural roads. It looks very clean and tidy throughout, wearing its minor scrapes and flakes very well and it features the chrome front end which adds just enough bling. They definitely built them strong in those days, and there’s no serious rust anywhere and although it’s tempting to consider a paintjob, that would lose much of its world-weary charm. It drives very well in a 1959 way, has a smooth overhead valve straight-six engine and four-speed floor gearchange. Shifts nicely, quiet rear end, stops and steers well. There’s a towbar with electrics (the original back bumper with integral towball is with it) and there’s a lockable toolbox on the bed. It has the considerable benefit of electric wipers, a set of excellent tyres and a clean and tidy interior. It needs nothing, so you can use it straight away for work or pleasure and enjoy the ambiance.
