Description

Welcome to the sale of my 1984 Soviet GAZ Volga 24 which was imported to the UK from Estonia in April 2017 and correctly registered with the DVLA before being purchased by me in June 2020. To the best of my knowledge there are only around five or six similar cars currently registered in the UK making this a rare offering indeed.

The brakes failed whilst driving the car home after purchase and on further inspection the car was found to need rather more work than I anticipated. I have therefore spent the past 18 months bringing it to what I believe to be a safe and legal condition. The car recently passed the MOT test with a single advisory on a slight leak from the rear exhaust silencer. A complete new exhaust system will be included in the sale for future fitment by the new owner.

I have replaced numerous parts on the car which include rear brake shoes and fittings, rear wheel cylinder kits, front and rear flexible brake hoses, brake master cylinder, clutch slave cylinder and flexible hose, front anti-roll bar drop links, one track rod end, carburettor, fuel filter and under bonnet rubber fuel pipes, fan belts, thermostat, top radiator hose, voltage regulator, windscreen washer pump, indicator flasher unit, distributor cap and HT leads, air filter housing and oil bath, main lighting switch, UK specification headlight units, five brand new whitewall radial tyres, a foglamp to the offside rear of the car (correctly wired into the headlamp circuit through an illuminated switch), obligatory mirror to the offside front door and road legal reflective number plates. On completion of the brake work, both the brake and clutch hydraulic systems were flushed and refilled with DOT5 silicone fluid.

The car now drives exceptionally well and has a valid MOT certificate until March 27th 2023. It is solid in all the right places but would benefit from the underside being stripped, painted and undersealed, together with the boot floor which appears sound but a little scabby in places. The left rear jacking point, whilst sound, has been damaged due to the car being incorrectly raised or perhaps having fallen off a jack. The heater matrix inside the car leaks so has been by-passed but this will only be an issue if you plan to drive the car in winter. The time clock doesn’t work, the rear screen demister fan only works on one speed and the temperature gauge reads low although the engine appears to reach normal temperature. I have fitted a cheap, retro radio which looks ok and works reasonably well through the single dash mounted speaker. The electric aerial works, albeit a little sluggishly but is now much improved following a liberal dose of WD40..

The sale will include a genuine handbook pack, two workshop manuals - one in Russian, the other in German, a photocopied English language driver's handbook, receipts for all replaced parts, various Estonian paperwork plus a large quantity of new spare parts (including the previously mentioned exhaust system), front brake shoes and wheel cylinders, brake servo overhaul kit, water pump repair kit and various other sundry items. Additionally, I have retained most of the old parts which will serve as patterns for future reference.

Due to the car being too big for most domestic garages I will also include a high quality Hamilton all weather outdoor car cover should the purchaser not have access to indoor storage.

I have the V5C which is correctly registered in my name together with a paper trail to confirm correct UK registration and one set of keys, neither of which fit the boot lid or fuel filler flap meaning these need to remain unlocked unfortunately. The original jack is correctly located in the boot together with a grease gun and tyre pump which were apparently part of the original tool kit. Viewings by appointment are available in the Staffordshire area. Requests to drive the car must be supported by fully comprehensive insurance (with no exceptions). Payment is by bank transfer only with the car only being released on confirmation of cleared funds. I am happy to assist with export subject to receipt of cleared funds and the purchaser making all arrangements for collection and transportation.

The car was recently featured in a bookazine called Eastern Bloc Classics and is pictured on the front cover. A copy of the book will be included in the sale.

I have attempted to provide a full and honest description but professional inspection is both welcome and encouraged to ensure you know what you’re buying and are happy with the accuracy of my description. The car has barely been driven in two years so it will be at the discretion of the purchaser as to whether to drive it home or collect by trailer.

Many thanks for looking. Any questions, please ask.
