The very car that saved Porsche’s bacon. The Cayenne 955 was launched in 2003, as seemingly a bit of a wildcard, whilst Porsche were up the proverbial creek financially. The Cayenne went on to be so successful that it pulled the business up and to date, the current Cayenne remains their second most sold model.
This is real Real McCoy, the Full Monty, the real deal 955 Cayenne Turbo S. Not just a Turbo badged up as an S. This absolute weapon boasts 513bhp and 531 lb ft of Torque. It is was a whole new benchmark for the SUV market and a real display of just what Porsche was capable of. The Cayenne Turbo S was (and still is) both ballistic on road, with a 0-60 time of just 4. 9 seconds, and better than the then equivalent fast Range Rover off road. Today, 955 Turbo S cars are so few and far between and rarely come to market. This is largely owing to the fact that when new, this car cost more than an art deco semi detached house in the Home Counties. Yes, really.
This is my own personal car, and as you might be able to tell by now, I’m rather fond of it. I’ve owned this car twice. And I’m sure I’ll buy it back from whoever buys it next. It’s just become a little bit redundant these past few months as I’ve bought a few new cars and I feel it deserves a better home.
The car is finished in the spec I spent an eternity looking for. Basalt Black with Black extended leather and the ultra rare “moon roof” panoramic glass sunroof with the factory fitted Turbo S aero body kit. Immediately upon purchasing the car the first time, I sent it to Car Audio Security and had a double DIN Kenwood Apple Car/ Bluetooth/ DAB head unit professionally fitted along with a very discrete reversing camera. The car retains all steering wheel controls on the new head unit and I still have the original Porsche unit that will go with the car.
Not only did I buy this car for its spec, but also its condition and service history. This was the third 955 Turbo S I went to see over a period of 5 months and the only one that I saw that looked right, felt right, drove right and had the right service history to back it up. It was a little bit higher mileage than I initially wanted (currently 113, 000 miles) but you would never tell and, again, the way it has been maintained rather precluded any fears having been serviced by Porsche themselves and renowned Porsche specialists like JZM Porsche it’s entire life when I bought it.

The 955 Cayenne does have some known weaknesses such as coolant pipe issues on the Turbo and Turbo S models. These have already been changed for the aftermarket upgraded alloy pipes. As a precaution, I fitted a new compressor for the air suspension when I first bought it and also removed the notorious drain plug caps that can cause the windscreen scuttle drains to flood the ECUs. Today, absolutely everything works as it should on the car. It is still properly fast by modern standards, as comfortable as its newest younger brother and, moreover, it just represents the most unbelievable bang for buck.
I will be very sad to see this car go, just as I was last time, but again, the time has come, for now, and I really would like first refusal from its next custodian.
