Dorman Stafford Spider.
This 2 seater was build at Dormann's building in Stafford.
It is still the same building that serves as the Stafford headquarters for the Dormann company that is world-renowned for building marine engines.
The Dormann vehicles all have a little bit of shipbuilding in their construction.
The body part that is painted consists of small shaped wooden planks that are nailed to a wooden frame with copper nails as one would build a wooden ship.
The dashboard also has some marine instruments adapted for use on a car.
We know with certainty that this is the only surviving car of the marque and was designed in 1919 just after the First World War to give a new impetus to the marque after the government only allowed them to do shipbuilding during the First World War.
It is therefore a car that served as a sales model at car shows and auto salons in Europe.
In 1921 the car was sold to the first owner in England and this car had served as a prototytpe of a series of 12 sold cars.
One could choose from 2 engines of different power and from 3 types of bodywork that were built on this chassis.
This car drove around until 1964.
After that, every trace of it disappeared and for decades people thought the marque had completely disappeared... until we found this beautiful example in a stone quarry in Flanders.
It is still preserved in excellent condition and the engine kicks on immediately when started.
If you are interested in this exceptional vehicle and piece of British history you can always make us a proposal or offer.
Dorman is a worldwide well-known engine builder for the last 151 years.
Currently, the company is still in the business of building large marine engines.
The Dormann company knows that this is the last car and they have information about the car factory in the early 1900's until the last cars in the 1920's.
We have also a written report from a British expert that made a research on this car.
