We have often praised the MGB as a good “entry level” classic, but that is in a way a bit of a disavowal of a car that, on its own terms, does pretty much everything right. Not only is an MGB pretty and easy to drive, it is also well put together compared to many of its contemporary competitors and it works really well in everyday life too. With its self-supporting bodywork, MG got rid of the rattling and shaking that was an inseparable part of a drive in the previous models with a separate chassis frame, and at the same time you got a much stiffer and more torsionally stable bodywork. The compact cabin is comfortable and with plenty of legroom for even the tallest drivers. The reliable 1800 engine has good power, and the torque characteristic suit the car well. With electric overdrive it is also quite comfortable on longer journeys, where a respectable speed is maintained without becoming stressful.
Its world-wide appeal to sports car enthusiasts seems endless and it probably still today represents – if any car – the epitome of an open British sports car. There is a large and supportive community and a rich supply of spare parts avaible. This makes life as an MGB owner somewhat easier than many owners of other classic cars experience. The fact that it is both easy and cheap to keep running only makes the ownership more joyful.
The car presented here is an early “Pull-handle” version produced spring 1964, in extremely good condition. It still has its original engine and has the very desirable electric overdrive. Originally imported from California to Germany, then came to Denmark. Within the last 5 years, the engine has been restores including crankshaft, new oil pump, piston rings, bearings etc., so that it pulls really well again – and without oil consumption. New clutch, propshaft, tires, springs and bushings all contribute to making driving a pleasure. In fact, we would say that this car is one of the best MGB’s we’ve driven. The bodywork is completely free from rust with superb panel fitting, and looks stunning in the piano black paint. The black paintwork is beautiful and is matched by high finish chrome, and the black cabin likewise also appears in top condition. So without being an over-restored car, it is just a super nice and well maintained car. The Moto Lita steering wheel in thick leather is the right steering wheel for an MG, and in the boot you will find a nice soft top as well as a tonneau.
