Launched at the Paris Motor Show in September 2012, the McLaren P1 was the first Hypercar produced by McLaren since its revival in 2010. Its resurgence emerged from the desire to produce a supercar capable of competing with the Porsche 918 and the Ferrari LaFerrari, in order to reinforce the Woking brand's credibility against the giants of this segment. There was also another significant challenge: The P1 succeeded 20 years later to the legendary F1, at the time unrivaled performance-wise.
It was a must to meet expectations from enthusiasts of the brand. Its design therefore showcased the quest for extreme performance, with a carbon monocoque chassis derived from the one on the MP4-12C, a 3. 8-litre twin-turbo V8 engine developing 727 horsepower coupled to an in-house electric motor producing 176 horsepower. Weighing only 1, 395kg dry for 903 horsepower, it goes from 0 to 200 km/ h in 6. 8 seconds and 0 to 300 km/ h in 16. 5 seconds; it also reaches a top speed of 350km/ h. Additionally, the P1 has a hydropneumatics suspension system similar to the one developed by Citroen in the 1950s, which enables it to not only control mass transfers with precision but also to lower the car to the ground by 50mm and significantly harden the suspension, thanks to its "race" mode.
The P1 also benefited from a major aerodynamic development, generating 600kg of downforce at 257km/ h while maintaining a drag coefficient of only 0. 34, a technical feat! In 2016, Lanzante suggested the conversion of P1 GTR cars into road cars and this version was then called P1 LM. In 2017, the prototype of this LM version completed a timed lap of the famous Nordschleife in 6:43. 22 and was ranked 4th among non-road approved cars because it didn't have registration plates at the time. Even today, it would be classified as the 3rd fastest homologated car at the Nurburgring. Only 6 cars benefited from this LM specification.
It was therefore a successful challenge for the McLaren P1 and after only 2 years of work, it stood up to Porsche and Ferrari by offering performances extremely close to those of its competitors. This particular car is the 14th manufactured. Delivered new in England to its first owner, it was ordered in the superb Volcano Yellow colour with black leather and Alcantara interior. Among other things, it also has yellow stitching, a steering wheel covered in yellow stitched Alcantara, the dashboard and door inserts in Alcantara, the Meridian audio system, titanium exhaust pipes, silver callipers, bumpers in clear carbon, roof air intake, mirrors, etc.
Seriously serviced at McLaren Birmingham and McLaren Manchester between 2015 and 2019, its current owner acquired it in September 2020 and continued to service it at McLaren Paris and Pesterfield. Its last service was in October 2023 at McLaren Brussels to change the electric water pump; the car was only driven for 100 km since then. It is now presented with its service logbook and invoices. With a total mileage of 9, 354km at the time of our visit, this car is in remarkable aesthetic condition, with virtually no signs of wear noted during the inspection.
Production of the P1 ended in December 2015. With only 375 examples built, the P1 is the rarest Hypercar of its generation. Ten years after its release, the design and performance have not aged a bit. Furthermore, we can also see that modern McLaren cars have a style highly inspired from the P1 and their design is still closely linked to the one on the P1.
