What we have here is a very original, two-owner 1976 Holden HX Monaro GTS sedan.
Still wearing its original 1976 registration, this amazing ‘survivor’ is presented in largely factory Mandarin Red paintwork, though it’s had some attention with rust and consequent paint repairs along the way.
As you’d expect from a car that’s clocked up an indicated 293, 610km, the GTS’ duco is showing the marks of a life well lived, and age-related wear such as deterioration to some of the window rubbers.
Inside, the HX cabin is trimmed in Chamois-coloured vinyl. The rear seat is original, with the front buckets and centre console both retrimmed in the correct GM-H vinyl. The carpets are also original – and a little worn in the front – plus there’s a period but non-factory Pioneer stereo/ cassette player in the dash and matching parcel shelf speakers.
Under the bonnet is Holden’s famous 308 5. 0 litre V8, hooked to a three-speed automatic transmission.
Owned by our vendor since 1985 and always Holden dealer serviced, the HX Monaro sedan was used as a daily driver until being parked, after duties as his wedding car, in 2005.
Stored in a garage under cover for the subsequent 17 years, the ’76 GTS was then professionally recommissioned and put back on the road in 2022.
This HX GTS is now being sold with its original owner’s manual, Holden dealer service paperwork, and various receipts.
Just about anything Australian-made is collectible these days, of course, but Holdens with Monaro heritage in particular are especially desirable, and in HX form they’re rare as the model was only produced for two years.
Our new owner will thus have the choice of running this ‘survivor’ HX Monaro GTS as is, or giving it a birthday. Either way it is going to be a hit at the next car club run.
