With the astounding success of the 1932 Ford Model 18, Ford was well-motivated to maintain their momentum. For 1933, the Model 40 introduced an extensive update to the car. A longer wheelbase, revised styling inspired by E. T. Gregorie's British Model Y concept, and better ergonomics were a few of the changes. Additional horsepower from a revised ignition system provided a welcome increase in performance.
For 1934, Ford was content with a simple facelift, calling the car the Model 40B. A different grille, two-handle hoods, and smaller headlamps are the most obvious distinctions. The engine was again upgraded, now producing 85hp (in comparison to the 1932's 65hp). While the car was somewhat heavier than the 1932 model, the increased horsepower can be felt throughout the rev range. Understandably, these cars were often modified by hot rodders, so genuine, well-presenting examples are now quite desirable for collectors and enthusiasts alike.
