Lot 39
1961 BSA 500cc Golden Flash/ A7 Shooting Star Special
Registration no. 997 XVC
Frame no. GA7 17928
Engine no. CA7SS 7176
Announced in September 1946, the A7 was BSA's first production parallel twin. Mechanically it followed Triumph lines but made do with a single camshaft rather than the Triumph's two. Unusually, the gearbox bolted directly to the rear of the engine in semi-unitary style. The entire ensemble was housed in an unsprung duplex loop frame. For 1951 the engine was extensively revised along the lines of the Bert Hopwood-designed A10 650,
The handsome BSA 'special' offered here consists of the frame from a Golden Flash dispatched originally to Queens Road Motors in the UK in March 1961, while the engine is a 500cc unit from an A7 Shooting Star sent to T Cowie of Newcastle-upon-Tyne in January 1960. The age-related registration was issued in 2018. The BSA has been restored by the vendor and styled along the lines of a BSA Hornet street scrambler, complete with upswept twin-pipe exhaust system. The engine has been fitted with new piston rings and still needs running-in (only some 10 miles have been covered post-rebuild). The machine is offered with a V5C Registration Certificate, a BSA Owners Club dating certificate, and a number of invoices for parts purchased from marque specialists SRM Ltd.
All lots are sold 'as is/ where is' and Bidders must satisfy themselves as to the provenance, condition, age, completeness and originality prior to bidding. Visit the Bonhams Motorcycles website for all pertinent auction information.
