The Honda Motor Company was founded by Soichiro Honda in 1937, initially producing piston rings for Toyota. They made their first motorcycle in 1949 and within 10 years had become the biggest motorcycle manufacturer in the world and have gone on to produce over 400 million two-wheelers as well as millions of other powered products. The legendary inline four-cylinder CB750/ 4 was launched in 1969 to great acclaim and laid down the blueprint for the modern day superbike, but Honda always liked to push the boundaries with different layouts. The transverse V-twin CX500 was such a model and after initial teething problems built up an enviable reputation for durability, becoming the despatch rider’s weapon of choice.
Believed to be of low mileage, at a mere c. 9, 000 miles (unverified), this CX500 presents as very original with some recent sensitive paintwork and genuine parts. Originally a Canadian machine (the vendor replaced the headlight, for UK use, and replaced the indicators with the smaller UK model type), it's fitted with the original Honda exhaust system, with its unmolested wiring and seat in good condition. It still has the original FVQ shocks, the original tool kit and the owner's handbook. The tank and associated bodywork has been recently professionally resprayed and looks great. Because of its condition and rarity the vendor describes it as 'always attracting attention'. In good running order it is a great example of a late '70s classic. It's a real rarity, as many of these bikes have been run into the ground.
Starting on the button and running well, since being recommissioned and back on the road it's had a 100-mile shakedown. The recommissioning consisted of a full service with new air and oil filters, the fluids replaced, new spark plugs, the carburettors overhauled with genuine parts and balanced, valve clearances checked, a new battery and tyres. The rack and crash bars are currently not fitted, however, they are included with the bike. With a current V5C and two keys, it is registered as an Historic vehicle.
