BELLY TANK RACER BASED ON A FORD MODEL A FOUR BANGER Extremely rare in Europe. Only 7 similar vehicles but none identical - History: Purchased from David Grainger of The Guild Garage. The Belly Tank Racer was the subject of an episode of Restoration Garage in 2019. Once filming was complete, it remained on display until my purchase in 2023. This vehicle is so atypical that importing it from North America and clearing it through customs was costly and complicated.
- Features: The body is made of fibreglass moulded onto a Lookeed P38 belly tank. Most of the mechanical parts (engine, gearbox, brakes, running gear, etc.) come from a Ford Model A from the late 1920s. The Ford A spoke wheels are fitted with period reproduction Firestone tyres. The four drum brakes are controlled by mechanical rods. The engine is an original 4-cylinder flathead (side valves) with the exception of the ignition. The 3-speed gearbox with reverse gear is modified to allow gear changes from the cockpit. A bomber seat with a lap belt, a hand-crafted wooden steering wheel and a few old-fashioned dials make up the very narrow and rudimentary cockpit, which has been improved and made more reliable over the years.
