Ducati was established in 1926 by Antonio Ducati and his sons, initially producing electrical components. After WW2 they moved into motorcycles with the Cucciola, essentially a pushbike with a clip-on engine. By the 1960s they had become associated with performance bikes selling a range of sporty 250 and 350 singles. In response to the demand for larger capacity bikes’ chief engineer Fabio Taglioni designed the classic vee-twin bevel drive engine first used in the 1971 GT750. This proved to be an immediate success, helped considerably by Paul Smart’s win in the 1972 Imola 200 race, and became Ducati's signature design. This started a tradition of race-winning vee-twins that have gone on to dominate World Superbike racing over the years. The air-cooled SS models were intended to be sporting Ducatis for the masses, providing an unmistakably Italian motorcycle that didn’t carry the usual Ducati steep price tag and expensive maintenance requirements.
This nicely presented 900SS, showing just 14628 miles on its speedo was bought by the vendor in 1998 as only its third owner. Unusually for a Ducati from that era, it is still in standard trim, including its original exhaust, and has spent most of its life at his house in Cognac, France. Maintained by the enthusiast owner, he has kept a detailed record of all the servicing work carried out, and has recently recommissioned the bike ready for sale including new cam belts, plugs, air filter, battery and an oil and filter change. It will be supplied with its original owner's manual, both keys, detailed service history and a current V5C.
