Paul the details below
Norman motorcycles were built in Ashford, Kent, well away from the industry’s traditional Midlands home. Originally enamellers and platers, Norman turned to bicycle manufacture in the mid-1930s and exhibited its first powered two-wheelers in 1938. In the immediately post-war years the range consisted of an autocycle plus the B1 and B2 lightweights of 122 and 197cc respectively, all Villiers powered. The famous Nippy moped first appeared with Sachs power in 1956, changing to a Villiers 3K engine in 1959 as the Nippy II. In the early 1960s the Italian Mi-Val engine was used for the Nippy III and the Sachs unit for the Lido/ Super Lido, while only the Nippy IV, by now updated with swinging-arm rear suspension and leading-link front fork, retained Villiers power. Norman was taken over by Raleigh and produced its final machines in 1962.
