1928 Douglas DT 5 adapted for quick conversion into road use (SW 5) . This Machine is in very nice condition , too nice to be described as "oily rag" but not concours . It has original carburettors, Douglas hubs on the dirt track wheels (on the road wheels the rear hub is Douglas but the front is BSA half width 7" drum). BTH mag and double Pilgrim oil pump. All the nickel plating is very good. The road mudguards are not original. I keep the original Douglas rear brake in situ for grass and road use, to convert the bike to or from either mode takes about 3 hours on the bench and I change the jets in the carbs to run on methanol for grass meetings. I run it on normal mineral oil too because "R" is so messy. It has a Norton clutch which works very well in both modes. The original Douggie gearbox is in very good shape but on the road it is best not to go from neutral to a gear with the bike stationary but you can straddle along a few feet and slip it into first quite easily but keeping it in any gear with the clutch in isn't a problem - thanks to the superb Norton clutch, either way it bump starts so easily. It has a V5 and the road tyres are almost brand new, the grass tyres are a bit worn but perfectly serviceable, the paint work on the frame is a bit dull and if I had intended to keep it in road trim I would have stove enamelled it but as it was used on grass too-i never bothered. Its performance on tarmac or grass is brilliant , surprisingly too its quite comfortable on the road providing there are not too many pot holes , I have done quite a few VMCC runs on it with no problems - even on the Isle of Wight. I have a Norton gearbox shell adapted for the Douglas mounting lugs if someone wanted to put a complete 4 speed Norton box on it like all the sprinters. I have some history with it and a few other spares.
