THE CAR
This lovely 1980 Ford Escort 1600 Sport Mk 2 has just arrived at Roman Garages from a local customer. Its one of the Fast Ford family, and prices are rapidly rising. These Escorts, once a common sight on UK roads, have all but disappeared. We are pleased to announce that we have this one to sell.
ENGINE AND GEARBOX
The engines Ford chose to use the Escort Sport provided strong performance and good fuel economy. The 1600 c. c. 4 cylinder in our car here is no exception, and benefits from a replacement Weber 32/ 36 twin choke carburetor. The car responds willingly to a firm right foot, and pulls strongly throughout the rev range. The slick 4-speed gearbox is an excellent match to the Sport engine with close ratios and a short throw gear stick. It just asks to be driven hard.
THE INTERIOR
The seats are two tone grey front and rear, and the carpets are in black. The 1600 Sport has a small steering wheel, and the dash houses a instrument binnacle which utilises the familiar Ford curved glass, which was designed to stop reflections. Its not the most equipped vehicle in terms of instruments and controls, but it is a functional specification reflecting its rallying background.
THE EXTERIOR
This is a very clean rust-free Escort Sport. The previous owner had it professionally repainted in the original blue, and it remains in very good condition. The genuine Ford RS wheels and almost mandatory Cibie spotlights combine to give this fast Ford an aggressive stance.
HISTORY
This Ford Escort 1600 Sport began its life in South Africa before being shipped to UK in 2015. The last owner, who is well known in the region for his military vehicles, spent a lot of time and money on this car. There is some paperwork with the car.
CONCLUSION
This is a well presented and looked after car. The Escort Mk2 range is now becoming collectable and we recommend that you move fast for this one. The 1600 Sport is a lively performer, offering good performance, handling and impressive economy, as well as seating 4 in relative comfort. This Sport comes with a peace of mind extendable warranty.
