The racing driver Chris Lawrence is best known for his preparation work, his prototypes and his workshop " Lawrence Tune " in West London. One of his great triumphs was to prepare the Morgan that won its class in the 1962 Le Mans 24 Hour race. He also designed the Deep Sanderson 301, a small sports car with a mid-positioned BMC engine, beam chassis and aluminium body. The example we are presenting left his workshop in January 1963, equipped with a more highly tuned engine in order to participate in that year's Le Mans 24 Hour Race. The invoices from Downton addressed to Lawrence mention that the engine prepared for Le Mans was destined for the car D/ S 63 GT number 1003. The car was entered with race number
44 and driven by Chris Lawrence and Chris Spender. During the race, it left the track causing a delay, and had to retire in the 15th hour for not covering enough distance.
The car was later taken up by a French enthusiast by the name of JM Muratore, who raced it as part of the " Ecurie Bleue " until the start of the 1980s. It then left for England and, after a period of neglect, was rescued in 2002 by David Ramsbotham, the former financial director of Aston Martin, who undertook a full restoration of the car. He was aided by Chris Lawrence himself and in 2010, once the project was completed; the car participated in the 2010 Goodwood Festival of Speed. The current owner acquired this petite coupé in 2016, with a large file of invoices, an inspection report and various photographs. This rare hand-built car, light and agile, reflects the ingenuity of its preparer. It is highly eligible for numerous historic motorsport events, including Le Mans Classic.
