It revolutionised the compact roadster segment with its retractable hardtop, offering both the pleasure of driving as a cabriolet and the comfort of a coupé. The retractable roof mechanism is called Vario-roof by Mercedes! The SLK 230 Kompressor, equipped with a 2. 3-litre supercharged engine, delivers 193 bhp, ensuring dynamic performance while keeping fuel consumption under control. By the way, do you know how many models were produced with manual gearboxes? Only 28, 199! A little historical anecdote :) The retractable hardtop system known as the 'coupé cabriolet' is not new! This technology was used by Peugeot and then Ford in the 1930s before being forgotten. It was Georges Paulin, a self-taught stylist and engineer, who developed and patented this system known as the 'Eclipse'! The SLK R170 was a resounding success for Mercedes-Benz. By introducing the coupé-cabriolet trend, it won over customers thanks to its versatility, offered by its hardtop, and attracted a clientele that was not used to using a cabriolet on a daily basis.
