Known history
A work by designer Giorgetto Giugiaro for Bertone, the 2600 Sprint coupé has the privilege of being the last inline-six with twin-cam heads from Alfa Romeo. Beyond its very flowing lines, this elegant Italian GT is thus distinguished by its exceptional performance for its era. With a top speed approaching 200 km/ h, the Italian dolce vita is lived at full throttle! The Sprint’s peculiarity, also found on the Spider, is the presence of three double-body carburettors.
A rare car whose production did not exceed 7, 000 units. You would have to get up early to find a good example on the collector market.
The car shown here is a rare example with Borrani wheels (period option) as well as Dell'orto carburation.
An aesthetic plus, as the wire wheels make this 2600 more desirable than ever, and a sonic asset thanks to the enchanting melody of the Italian carburettors. It is moreover in its original livery.
Delivered in 1962 in Sussex (but left-hand drive), it later went to Stavanger, Norway. It has also been part of the 'Klubb Alfa Romeo Norge' until 2023 and its arrival in France.
After research with this club, we had the chance to speak with one of its owners who bought it in 1994 and who led, in the 2000s, a complete body restoration as well as an engine restoration in 2016.
The paintwork presents well. A few minor age-related flaws are noted. The Borrani wheels are in excellent condition.
The car on a lift allowed us to confirm a good state of the chassis and sills. The appraisal highlighted the absence of corrosion.
A restoration of the bodywork was carried out in 2003: stripping, blasting and restoration of worn elements as well as a special treatment. Front and rear axles have been dropped, as evidenced by the photos supplied by the owner at the time.
The Bordeaux-coloured upholstery was restored in 2013: seats and door panels present well. The dashboard shows no faults, as does the headlining. The carpets are in standard condition.
The instrumentation is functional. The wiring loom has largely been restored.
Noting for enthusiasts of family outings the presence of 4 comfortable seats which makes it a versatile car.
On the engine side, it is Matching Numbers. Indeed, it has a type 00608 engine corresponding to the model but from 1964. The 1962 engine is type 00601.
It was completely restored by the second owner in 2016: pistons, rings, bearings. The cylinder head was also tested and valve seats changed to run on unleaded. The gearbox and clutch have also been opened for a total overhaul.
The car is currently maintained and tracked in a specialist workshop and recent costs include:
- clutch kit
- fuel pump
- master cylinder and brake servo
- bespoke oil hoses
- starter
The last service date is April 2024: engine, gearbox and rear axle oil changes; belt inspection, ultrasonic cleaning of the 3 carburettors and synchronization.
The battery is new. The 4 tyres show 10% wear.
For lovers of Italian GTs this is a chance to own a model fairly rare on our roads. A small production for a mythical car!
