The Appeal
Before Renault went full silly with the flared arches and Nürburgring lap times, there was this — the Clio 172 Cup Sport. It’s the more focused, stripped-back sibling of the standard 172, with no ABS, no traction control, no leather, no climate control… and no faff. Just a light body, a fizzy 2.0-litre naturally aspirated engine, and a snappy chassis that taught a whole generation how to drive properly.
This one shows 95,000 miles and five previous owners, but it presents well with that trademark metallic blue paint, Cup wheels, and an interior that’s still very much as RenaultSport intended — which is to say, spartan. It hasn’t been messed about with, it’s still running a stock exhaust, and the underside appears in fair condition for a 22-year-old French hot hatch. If you want something raw, rare, and ready to be enjoyed without taking itself too seriously, this one’s probably worth a punt.

The Condition
From the outside, it’s exactly what you want from a Cup car — simple, lightweight, and ready to go. There’s some age-related wear in the paint, particularly around the front bumper and trim plastics, but overall it looks complete and unmodified. The wheels appear correct for a 172 Cup, finished in anthracite with yellow brake callipers visible behind.
Underneath, there’s visible surface corrosion but nothing unexpected for a car of this age. The exhaust and chassis rails show age, and there’s minor flaking on suspension components, but it’s all fairly typical for a 2002 French car that’s seen British roads.
Inside, it’s refreshingly basic. Cloth seats, blue trim highlights, no luxury spec, and a set of drilled pedals to remind you what this car is for. The original steering wheel is still fitted, as are the factory gauges and stereo unit. Some trim pieces show age-related fading and wear, but nothing looks damaged or missing.
