Chassis: 01252
Engine: 01252
This car is possibly one of the very first M-series Ferrari Dino 246 GT delivered — or perhaps more accurately, collected.
Chassis 01252 is an exceptionally well-documented early example, with just eight owners, including the current custodian who bought the car on his retirement in 2024.
The first of these — custodians is the more appropriate word — was Dudley Mason-Styrron, who part-exchanged his Ferrari 365 GTB/ 4 Daytona in 1970 to secure the Dino.
Dudley travelled to Maranello on 9th December 1970, six months after placing his order on 10th June, choosing to collect the car personally. The accompanying history file includes documentation from that trip, and as I say, the file is quite exceptional.
The car was specified in Rosso Chiaro (Ferrari 20-R-190) with black upholstery featuring bright red centre inserts, complemented by matching red carpets.
In March 1971, Dudley was offered over list price for chassis 01252 by Sean Bealy, Managing Director of Maranello Concessionaires. He accepted, and the car passed to its second custodian.
By August 1978, chassis 01252 was sold (for £5, 900) to Mrs Griggs. The history file suggests this ownership lasted 19 years, during which time the car spent a period residing in France. The records also confirm the registration BHJ 229J, which the car still carries today.
In 1994, Valentine Christensen became the next long-term custodian, taking delivery with 55, 374 miles recorded. By 23rd July 1997, the car was with Kent High Performance Cars, being prepared for a Dino concours event. Substantial expenditure had already been invested by the previous owner,
Mrs Griggs and family, including:
• Interior retrim (black leather and carpets)
• Full body restoration and repaint at 45, 000 miles
• Top-end engine rebuild at 54, 000 miles
During the Griggs tenure, the car covered just 5, 000 miles in there final 12 years. A note in the file amusingly suggests the sale was prompted by the electric windows failing after all that expenditure.
Valentine Christensen added around 5, 000 miles of enjoyable use, with 01252 maintained meticulously by Omega Motorsport.
Before offering the car for sale, our client had it thoroughly serviced, including a brake fluid change, along with new correct pattern Michelin XWX tyres, ensuring the car is ready to be used and enjoyed.
When the car arrived with us — alongside several others from the same client — we were immediately impressed by its presentation. It has even done the school run a few times, simply so we could get a proper feel for it. Once warm, the car drives exactly as a good Dino should: it rides British roads well, with no unpleasant knocks, and the brakes pull up evenly and confidently.
Looking down the sill line, you’ll notice the correct kick-down ahead of the rear wheel. Panel fit is tidy, shut lines are even, and the doors open and close beautifully. The window motors also work correctly! This is a unique opportunity to acquire this early build genuine RHD example which presents very well and is rot free,
The only real point to note is that the dashboard has been retrimmed, carried out at a time when the original mouse-hair material was not available.
