The Appeal

The first-generation Corvette is where the legend began. Produced between 1953 and 1962, the C1 combined transatlantic glamour with genuine sporting credentials, and today it stands as one of the most iconic and collectable post-war American sports cars. Examples fitted with the 283ci small-block V8 and a four-speed manual gearbox occupy the sweet spot of the range.

This C1 was sourced directly from the USA in 2017 and has since undergone a thorough mechanical overhaul. The work was carried out not out of necessity but with the express aim of creating a reliable, enjoyable driver. A date-correct 283ci engine was completely rebuilt by 5 Star Engines in the USA, while the gearbox, differential, brakes, suspension, cooling system, fuel system and exhaust have all been overhauled or renewed. The vendor says the car runs and drives with real confidence, and has been driven to Ireland and across Europe without issue.

Its calibre has not gone unnoticed on the show circuit either, having won several prizes including Best in Show at the Annual Gordon Bennett Classic Rally in Ireland. Yet this remains very much a car built to be driven, with the vendor noting it is comfortable even on long journeys. A new leather interior has been fitted, and while minor cosmetic imperfections are consistent with a car over 60 years old, the vendor suggests it could be brought to full show standard with relatively little time or investment.

The Condition

New leather interior fitted
GRP body has some minor paint blisters and a small (20mm) crack on the bonnet edge of the driver's wing, typical of a 60-plus-year-old fibreglass body

Two extra holes in two cross members (common on C1s) for a non-standard exhaust; checked by an engineer who confirmed no effect on frame strength or integrity
Brightwork is largely original and showing some signs of wear; one small mark on the driver's side front bumper
Boot lock is broken; a replacement has been ordered and paid for but not yet received: a simple two-screw replacement
Soft top will need replacing and the frame will need servicing; the car was rarely driven in the rain

The vendor states the car could be brought to full show standard with relatively little time or investment. Indeed, it presents exceedingly well throughout, showing remarkably few imperfections when one considers its age. Glass fibre is notoriously unforgiving to paint, so the fact this 'Vette shows so few imperfections demonstrates just how fine it is. As noted above, there are a few small items that would benefit from attention, but nothing particularly onerous. The colour scheme really makes this car, suiting those bold curves down to a T.

It's wonderful to see that a great deal has been spent improving this car mechanically. The owner wanted it to be as drivable as possible; they intended to use it, which we wholeheartedly commend. And use it they did, having taken the car to Ireland and into Europe without issues. The vendor states the car does not burn oil or water and returns a very respectable 20–25 mpg on a run, though they concede "this drops dramatically if you hit the loud pedal hard!"

The vendor says:

"I bought this as a driver, not a show piece and as such I have left the cosmetics that didn't need doing. Very comfortable to drive, even on long journeys. I have a lot of original parts that were replaced, as well as service spares, far too many to list, these will all be included in the sale."
