The Appeal

One of the joys of classic motoring is that once-expensive and rarified cars become considerably better value. The original 986 Boxster perfectly encapsulates this. Despite growing interest in these highly capable mid-engined roadsters, they remain good value, certainly compared to their rear-engined sibling.

Many Boxsters have been driven hard and far, but this Zenith Blue 1999 car appears to have escaped that fate. It is a desirable early 2.5L car with the stronger dual-row IMS bearing and presents in good condition across the paintwork, bodywork and interior. It is also fitted with the 5spd manual box.

We’re told that the vendor acquired the car last year. A previous keeper was a Porsche employee who did much work to the car, including fitting a new fabric roof with heated glass screen. The current keeper has undertaken considerable work including brake pipes repaired and protected, tie rods replaced, roof motors repaired and synchronised, passenger door actuator replaced, headlights restored, and paintwork corrected. Invoices from 2025 show over £2,200 of work and parts by Porsche main dealers. There is a current MOT valid to March 2027 with no advisories.

“The 986 Boxster represents the first generation of the model and is widely regarded as the car that helped revitalise Porsche in the late 1990s, making it an important part of the brand’s modern history Last recorded service at 3,000 miles. The previous owner, a Porsche employee, replaced the battery and spark plugs, carried out exhaust system work including gaskets, sealing rings, clamps, catalytic converter and rear back box, repaired the driver’s window mechanism, and replaced the convertible roof with a glass heated rear screen.

“I purchased the vehicle in September 2025, at which point it had high idle RPM (1200–1500), surface corrosion on brake pipes, play in the steering rack, non-operational roof, passenger door not locking, heavily oxidised headlights, and paint issues including oxidation on the rear quarter panel and cracks/chips on the front and rear bumpers. During my ownership, the intake air leak was resolved and the throttle body and idle control valve serviced (idle now 700–900 RPM), brake pipes repaired and protected, tie rods replaced, roof motors repaired and synchronised, passenger door actuator replaced, headlights restored, and paintwork corrected. A new MOT has been completed and is valid until 31 March 2027.”

“The exterior presents well overall following recent paint correction. Prior to this, the car had areas of oxidation and paint fade on the passenger side rear quarter panel, along with cracks and chips on the front and rear bumpers, which have since been addressed. The headlights have been restored from previous oxidation and are now clear. As with a car of this age, there may be minor age-related marks, but overall the bodywork is in good condition.

“The interior is in good condition and has been refreshed during my ownership. The leather seats have been treated and refreshed, improving their overall appearance. The gear stick has been replaced with a new OEM unit, as the original was worn and damaged. The previous floor mats were heavily stained and have been replaced with new carpets. The interior has undergone a deep clean, including the steering wheel. Overall, it presents well, with only minor age-related wear consistent with the car’s age.

“The vehicle is in good mechanical condition following recent maintenance carried out during my ownership. Upon purchase, the car had a number of issues including high idle RPM, an air leak, brake pipe corrosion, play in the steering rack, non-operational roof, and a passenger door locking fault. These have since been addressed, including resolving the air leak and servicing the throttle body and idle control valve (idle now stable at 700–900 RPM), repairing and protecting the brake pipes, replacing the tie rods, repairing and synchronising the roof motors, and replacing the passenger door actuator. The car starts, runs, and drives as expected.”
