Diesels have rarely generated a seductive soundtrack, but the burble of Alfa Romeo’s 1.9-litre JTD engine can be quite melodic. It helps that this engine was dropped into some of Alfa’s finest Millennial designs, including the evergreen 156. In the Cosmo blue colour showcased here, the 156 remains a fine-looking four-door saloon, seemingly poised and athletic even while parked.

This car has been owned by the same person since its pre-delivery inspection was carried out in 2003, with an extensive array of paperwork attesting to regular maintenance. It also retains a wealth of original character, encapsulated in the Alfa Romeo badging on both the plastic inner and aluminium outer door sills. The Alfa badge is reprised everywhere from the bonnet and boot lid to the pedals and etched Pilkington glass.
 
Originality is one of this car’s greatest attractions, down to the original toolkit nestling inside the spare wheel below a boot carpet which shows few signs of use. There are rust bubbles in the rear passenger door sill and some underbody corrosion, with wear on the driver’s seat bolster and gearlever, yet this car still feels fresh despite having recently passed 140,000 miles. With a new radiator and battery installed recently, this one-owner car has the potential to become a true future classic.
