Serial number 3J5177SP - Circa 1941, with Donkey engine and rope start the vendor informs us that this fully restored example has recently had its Magneto refurbished and is offered with a selection of Handbooks and Instruction Manuals. The Caterpillar D2 was a compact crawler tractor built from 1938 to 1957 in the USA, in 2 versions (3J) Narrow Gauge as is this example or (5J) Wide Gauge, with a revised U version in 1947. “SP” stamped at the end of the Serial Number indicates Special Parts were substituted for standard parts on the machine. Examples include special transmission gears, oversized idlers in place of standard idlers, and other items that required special attention on the assembly line. Caterpillar began manufacturing new tractors, including the D2 model, in response to the "New Deal" programs that were initiated by President Franklin Roosevelt to stimulate America's economy.
