A prudently improved 'time warp' hatch from 1992 with genuine 50, 000 miles and driving superbly. NO RUST!
Hi and welcome to this listing for my fabulous wee Peugeot 309 Zest.
I've owned the car since May 2018 but have just retired and 'the management' is insisting that
we down-size from four to two cars so we can afford to eat... ridiculous!
I've always liked the sharp 'retro' shape of this (dare I say Escort, Maestro, Golf and Astra-beating) hatch and whilst recovering from surgery early last year, I spent ages looking for a cracking example from a dry and salt-free part of the UK, ie NO RUST! We bought 'Perrin' from sunny Cheshire and he was in excellent condition throughout. Drove back up to Scotland with temperatures reaching over 30C and he never missed a beat... and has never let me down since!
I avoid all the 'new tech.' cars like the plague of problems that they are and this reliable 309 has no 'Cat', wind-up windows, no power steering, a simple large pop-up sunroof, no silly computers, no central locking and comes with two sets of good ole-fashioned keys. Without all the modern 'gubbins', the car is light (less than 900kg) which makes for great economy and good handling. We achieve over 50 mpg on a run and about 40 mpg pottering about town.
I have a 'Motor' Magazine test of the 309 hatch versus all it's contemporary competitors.
The conclusion...
'Dynamically the 309 is amongst the best. It has excellent accommodation, a superb gearchange and a smooth engine.'
I'm 'OCD' about having my cars in good cosmetic and mechanical order, so there have been many good and sensible upgrades done over the past year in addition to thorough servicing and parts renewal. Here's a summary of the main work carried out (by the excellent local Balaclava Garage) with all new top quality parts...
- 'Gates' Timing Belt Kit & Water Pump
- KYB Gas Shockers all round
- Monroe Front Coil Springs
- All front steering and suspension bushes replaced with poly-bushes.
- Rear Torsion bar axle full overhaul by Fraser Brown Engineering
- Ekollon 'MAD' Progressive Helper Springs fitted to rear suspension.
- rear axle and suspension re-bushed
- recent FULL SERVICE (engine oil/ filter & gearbox oil, alternator belt, brake service, performance 10mm ignition lead set, new coil, dizzy cap, plugs, etc, etc.)
- carb cleaned and Solex service kit fitted
- new quality Radiator & Thermostat
- four superbly refurbished Peugeot '405' alloys shod with new Michelin 'Cross-Climate'
all-season tyres (balanced and tracking done)
- new engine/ gearbox mounts
- correct Pipercross 'foam-type' free-flow air filter fitted (I have the standard one in the 'spares box')
- new high output Exide battery with 5 year guarantee
- nice Clarion radio/ CD fitted and I still have the original Pug Radio/ Cassette for the new owner.
I think that's probably about all the major repair and upgrade items.
Importantly the other work has been to clean and rust-proof all the underneath areas.
This has been done with 'Aqua-Steel' where required followed by 'Wurth' Shutz under-body treatment.
The car is completely solid and rust-free. Nothing needs doing.
You'll see from the pictures that the carpets are protected with 5mm tailored rubber floor mats to both front and rear. The original carpets are unmarked including the driver's footpad.
The sale includes the original and very rare set of four monogrammed 'Zest' carpet overmats but I suggest these are kept safe for special outings.
The origial grey boot mat is present and virtually unmarked. Again, I have protected this with a 5mm rubber overmat. The original jack and tools are present and correctly stowed.
The wee 'mods' have made a huge difference to the road manners of this cracking wee hatchback...
indeed the car is much improved over factory new standard.
The ride and handling is poised/ nicely firm and the steering precise.
The gearchange is slick and the engine very willing with a nice crisp exhaust note from the Pipercross filter on the induction side.
Clearly, at my age, I am far from a 'boy racer' but I can't abide 'sloppy' cars. This now isn't one.
I have a good history file for the car, Owners Manual and Service Booklet, etc. The documents also include the original Sales Invoice from Horderns Motor House in Chapel-en-le-Frith. Amazingly, they are still Peugeot Main Dealers and have a very helpful parts department.
The cost of the 309 new was £8, 682.
The car comes with a hardly-used top quality 'Monsoon' tailored car cover from Coverzone
(worth over £150) along with a carry-case.
So there it is... a rather unique low miles and sensibly upgraded sporty hatchback in excellent order to enjoy as a 'daily driver' and good enough to take to shows. Very rare in this condition, it is a joy to own, will make a sound investment and is a real 'head-turner' with 'Pug' aficionados.
The current MOT expires on 5th. March 2020, but I'm happy to put a fresh 12 month MOT if preferred.
If you need any more help or information, please don't hesitate to contact me.
Home is in Dunoon on the northern shore of the river Clyde. I'm happy to meet in the Glasgow area for serious viewings and may also meet you part-way for delivery.
My thanks for looking and... Happy Motoring!
Andy.
