Description
Its time to part with my beloved yellow peril. (More banana yellow now thanks to the poor water based VW clear coat).
So yes it is suffering from the typical paint issues of VW for this build year.
Its the only one ever imported into the UK, from what I was told, it belonged to an Arm forces member stationed in Europe. Unfortunately the person passed away and it ended up in Spain where the sun took its toll on the Water based Clear coate.
The car never had UK headlight installed hence from what I understand this would tie into the British Forces Overseas Link.
The history of the car is 98% known, first owner etc, Registered new in Holand.
The car has never wanted for anything other than ware and tare items in the near 14years I have owned. If it needed anything, it got it, OEM or better. Not so long ago I changed the cam chains and guides and replaced the main oil seal along with the chain tensioner and adjuster.
I had planned to repaint it but family and DIY keeps getting in the way. Its an easy task as the paint within the door pillars is like new, no fading. So just the outer skin that needs sanding back and painting.
I had it converted to run LPG from 65k. Its now on 180k. I had the LPG jet re installed about 4 years ago as a hose fatigued and became kinked, for that I ordered a NEW Plenum intake from VW at a cost close to 1000euros. While it was off I checked the valves and the inlet tract and all look like new.
The LPG system is Prins VSI and I just had a new Prins regulator fitted last year. It has the filler located behind the number plate and runs a reasonable sized tank. The boot is flat as I padded it out with high density black foam. The system cost over 3k back in 2008!
As early as 2002 VW fitted these awful DMFs, and I had always hated the hysteresis in the drive line. This I finally corrected by fitting the 2. 9VR6 clutch and Fly wheel (a special conversion kit for the BDE engine) while it was off for the cam chain overhaul. Since then the clutch is light to press and changing gears is smoother, it quite a positive gate box, no sloppy gear changing is permitted.
Apparently it shares the A3 Quattro floor pan. if you ever need anything, then look at the A3 parts catalog.
Its stored in a dry air-rated garage, and regularly gets driven around the block to keep all things working.
So in a nut shell its has;
new cam chain and guides 2016
clutch, flywheel, pressure plate, throw out bearing. 2016
Crank main oil seal. 2016
A new cat (6years old now)
all 4 o2 sensors. Replaced.
All coil packs replaced at 85km
heldex oil change 2016.
New springs all round 2018
new shocks all round 2018
New discs and pads all round 2018
ABS sensor line Front – replaced by VW.
All door and boot seals NEW. 2016
Front RH window mechanism replaced – OEM (spare Driver side LH still boxed not fitted).
Some items I feel that need noting at are:
some times on this one LH corner when giving it some spirited driving and when its hotter than 26DegC out side the ESP kicks in. Dont know why, VagCom pulls no errors. So I replaced both ABS sensors but I think it needs the rotor rings doing as they rather corroded. I also coded in the Rough Road setting into the ECU to reduce the sensitivity.
It had some very light surface rust on the front arches and at the point where the side skirts join. I had these off and cleaned it all back. Just minor surface rust. The area was treated , Primed and a suitable banana shade yellow applied.
I put in for a MOT equivalent (HU) and got a clean bill of health. I did tell them I get a slight click from the steering but they said the track rod ends are OK and so they checked over the Steering column and noted possible slight ply in the steering column knuckle, All OK no grounds for failure.
Now I cant remember every changing in the track rods so it could be them.
Any inspection welcome. I have a car lift and pit in the garage so you can have a good nosy.
