For eleven years from 1982, Ford produced the Sierra, a family estate car or hatch-back that boasted a modern aerodynamic design which, in all aspects, was a departure from its predecessor, the Cortina. The XR4i launched in 1983; a high performance variant which was powered by the Capri’s 2. 8 litre Cologne unit. Two years later, the XR4x4 arrived. Produced in either the five door hatchback or estate and retaining the 2. 8 litre engine, this four wheel drive model was produced until 1990 in its original form. Despite the initial response from the press and public, the Sierra has become rather a cult classic and has gained a huge following, not least with those who prefer their transportation to be something of a statement.
