Supplied by BMW Cotswold this 2001 BMW M5 is a performance icon of the modern era, and is regarded by many as the best all-round version of the M5 to date, this is a extremely rare example only 32 have been made in Estoril Blue RHD cars. It is powered by the 400bhp 4. 9-litre naturally-aspirated S62 V8 engine, driven through the rear wheels via a six-speed manual transmission and limited-slip differential. This is an unapologetically well-loved and well-maintained example, the odometer shows 174, 089 miles from new.
The Estoril Blue bodywork is in great condition, with the sort of tight, even panel gaps and ripple-free flanks that speak of a life gently led. The paintwork is good to which has just undergone a full detail, and it's subtle hint of colour is a welcome change to the more usual blue we normally see on an E39 M5. There is no apparent evidence off either restoration or accident damage repairs.
Completed at the factory in November 2001, this M5 was delivered new to the UK and first registered on 2nd November the same year. The previous owner owned the car for the last fourteen years and has enjoyed just over 140, 000 miles on the road in that period.
The car sits on the correct set of 18-inch Chrome Shadow ‘Style 65’ alloy wheels with 10 dual spokes, which are all in great shape. The rubber seals and plastic trims around the body are in great order, as are the light lenses. Its cabin is trimmed in a black leather which is in fantastic condition as seen in the photo gallery below. The upholstery on the front passenger / driver seat and rear bench remains in superb condition. Its headlining is trimmed in anthracite fabric, and there is also a sunroof which functions as it should.
The front seats are electrically-adjustable and have heating, and ahead of the driver is the original M Sport multi-function steering wheel. The gear lever has been upgraded for a short-shift item, which feels amazing very direct and tight. Its dashboard and door card trim strips titanium trim are again in mint condition. The cabin equipment includes the original BMW media system with navigation, CD changer and cassette player, dual-zone climate control and rear parking sensors.
Mechanically this car is as good as it gets, as mentioned supported by the extensive history file. The engine pulls like a proverbial freight train and the 6 speed manual gearbox is just sublime. Everything on the M5, works exactly as it should. The car also benefits from climate control, a factory 6 stack CD changer, the original toolkit and equipment, electric seats, electric windows, electric mirrors, rear blinds etc.
During the previous vendor’s tenure, the engine oil and filter have been renewed every 6, 000 miles, and he has conducted extensive maintenance to keep on top of common issues. In 2019, the car has had a full geometry setup, new front drop links, track rod ends, rear/ front suspension arms and rear/ front ball joints as well as all new springs as seen in there photo gallery below (all parts came directly from BMW costing in excess of £1800). The VANOS system has been replaced, fuel pump, timing chain tensioners, the differential seals have been renewed and brand-new fuel lines have been installed, also replaced the thermostat and the final stage heater resistor as well as purchasing a brand new propshaft all of the above has been purchased from BMW. The car drives like a 20k miles example, everything feels extremely fresh and tight mechanically and has been maintained by very reputable specialists such as Evolve as well as BMW main dealers.
While overall this M5 is a highly original E39, there are a few subtle modifications present. These include a genuine Evolve exhaust which sounds perfect, add a perfect touch of bass whilst remaining the original sound of the beautiful V8 engine. In addition, an OEM AC Schnitzer roof spoiler has been installed which can be removed if required.
Its most recent MOT test was on 30th November 2020 at 173, 370 miles, which resulted in a clean pass with no advisories. The alloy wheels are fitted with a set of Accelera tyres, in size 245/ 40 ZR18 at the front and 275/ 35 ZR18 at the rear. All four tyres are in great condition with over 6m tread.
Accompanying the car is the original book pouch, including the owner’s manual, stamped maintenance record, user guides and a sales brochure. Three original keys are also present, including the valet key. A shoe box full of documents, to say the car comes with comprehensive history is a understatement.
Writing about the E39 M5 within the last few years, Road and Track magazine stated: “Even today, this M5 is the sports sedan by which all others are judged, and a lot of enthusiasts would argue that even BMW itself hasn't bested it”
This BMW M5 is a clean and usable example of a contemporary performance hero. In many ways, it remains the definitive template for the sports saloon genre, and this particular car has proved to be extremely reliable during the vendor’s ownership.
