I bought this very early Ariel Leader seven years ago from a charming elderly gentleman who lived close to me and had owned the bike for the previous 41 years, covering thousands and thousands of miles on it. He had loved and maintained it throughout his ownership but had reached an age where riding it had to cease. I bought it to add to my small 'collection' of bikes because it was a very early example of the Leader in nice original condition and with nearly all the factory options available when it was new. It has full panniers, side stand and centre stand, indicators, rear bumper, brake light working from front and rear brakes, headlight beam adjustment, and a dashboard mounted wind up 8-day clock which astonishingly still works!
At some point it has been fitted with alloy rims, Pazon ignition, and been converted to 12 volts. All the electrical items work as they should and the lights are excellent!
I rode the bike briefly after I bought it, at which time it started, ran and stopped fine, but to my shame it soon went to the back of my storage, which is where it has stayed ever since. Other more powerful four-stroke bikes have come and gone and rather diverted my attention from the little Leader. This has obviously hurt its feelings as it has now decided that it doesn't really want to start! My storage arrangements have also now changed so I've finally taken the decision that it deserves a better home where it will be fettled, given a bit more love and hopefully ridden regularly!
It's in very nice overall condition with a good windscreen and new battery. I have the original buff Log Book, Handbook and Guarantee, it still has its original registration number and it's a matching numbers bike. As you can see from the photos a large quantity of spares are included and I would imagine that there are numerous hard to find bits in there.
