i have always fancied one of these ever since they were new. They recently all but disappeared from our roads, and when the came up for sale recently, i just had to snap it up and experience the car.
when released, it was one of the most powerful cars in its class. It was in the same power league as the bmw e39 540i and the mercedes w210 e430. but, being a boxy volvo, it fell under the radar. What couldn't be hidden was the tremendous power plant which lurks under the bonnet:

mechanically, the car is sound. The engine is spot on. Starts first turn of the key. Idles in the correct manner. There are no major leaks, but there is a weep from the rocker cover. No overheating. Lambda light stays on, but in no way affects the way the car pulls (gives it a slightly uneven idle when colder).
pulls like a train. Lots of torque from the t6 unit. Both turbos spool up as they should, with no hesitation or power loss.
there are a couple of recent big bills for work as follows:

it was serviced at 76985 miles, so just over 2k miles ago.
the car has evidently been looked after, as the engine is as it should be and pulls hard. It is smooth and quiet on tickover, but slightly lumpier when stone cold, due to the lamdba sensor light.
the gearbox is ok. Goes through the gears as it should. It will sit at low rpm when doing 70mph on the motorway, hence over 28mpg is genuinely attainable in this beast of a machine! Would benefit from a transmission service, as indicated by the on-board message and sometimes it holds gears for a bit longer than it should, especially once in third.
the suspension feels tight and solid, with no untoward knocks or bangs. It is a comfortable drive and the car glides down the road.
brakes are fine and stop the car as they should, with no noticeable shuddering or grinding.
good tyres all round.

17" alloy wheels, grey half suede leather, electric glass sunroof, electric front seats, memory function on driver's seat, heated front seats, premium audio, cd changer, phone prep, electric windows x 4, electric folding door mirrors, heated door mirrors, split folding rear tailgate, front arm rests, front & rear head restraints, spare wheel, remote central locking, alarm & immobiliser, front fog lamps, volvo full size spare wheel
in presentable condition for the year, but not new or perfect. There are marks, blemishes and stone chips consistent with age and mileage. No rust. No rot. Both bumpers have a few scuffs. Osf wing has a bit of flat paint, as does the front bumper. Would benefit from a detail to bring out the former shine. Having said that, it still looks imposing and gets admiration wherever it goes. No one would think you paid less than £2k for this luxury lump of metal!
the interior is in good order, with some wear on the driver's seat bolster. The leather has some cracks on the front seats, and would benefit from a leather feed and clean. No rips or tears and it is still solid and in one piece.
the cabin in these s80 volvos really is sumptuous, and is on a different level compared to most of its rivals. Feels very upmarket, and makes you feel like a special when you drive it. They have the most comfortable seats!
if you want a new one, then head over to your local volvo dealership, who will happily sell you a brand new s90 for over £50k!
excellent heating system.
great stereo.
pretty much everything works as it should. No other warning lights on the dashboard. One remote fob needs new batteries.
comes with: 2 x remote keys, volvo folder, volvo s80 user manuals, mot history.
no large groups - you don't need to bring 5 people to view a sub-£2k car. Anyone trying to pour dirty oil into the coolant will dealt with appropriately.
